Unveiling the Splendor of Armenian Manuscripts: Western Diocese Hosts Lecture/Presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Morrison

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America hosted an enlightening lecture featuring Elizabeth Morrison, Ph.D., Senior Curator and Department Head of Manuscripts at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The event took place in the Hampar Room of the Diocesan Headquarters under the auspices of the Diocesan Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. The evening began with welcoming remarks by Mr. Derik Ghookasian, Chair of the Diocesan Council, who introduced Dr. Morrison by highlighting her impressive academic and professional background in the field of art history and medieval manuscripts.

The lecture, entitled “Illuminating the Armenian Middle Ages,” offered a fascinating exploration of Armenian manuscripts and their place within the broader context of medieval art. Dr. Morrison presented a visual and historical journey through some of the most exquisite examples of illuminated Armenian manuscripts, examining their stylistic development, theological depth, and cultural significance. Her presentation highlighted how these sacred works not only reflect the spiritual life of the Armenian people but also stand as powerful testaments to their enduring artistic and intellectual traditions.

Dr. Morrison also discussed the evolution of manuscript production and miniature art throughout history, emphasizing the distinct characteristics that make Armenian manuscripts unique among other medieval traditions. She drew attention to the meticulous craftsmanship, vibrant iconography, and deep symbolism that define these works, illustrating how they serve as a bridge between faith, art, and cultural identity. Her talk inspired attendees to appreciate the profound role of the Armenian Church in preserving these treasures and transmitting their legacy through generations.

In his closing remarks, Archbishop Hovnan Derderian expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Morrison for her scholarly insight and contribution to the understanding of Armenian cultural heritage. As a token of appreciation, His Eminence presented Dr. Morrison with a painting depicting the “Resurrection of Lazarus.” The evening also featured a beautiful cultural interlude, with solo performances by Arsine Zargaryan, member of the St. Leon Cathedral’s Shnorhali Choir. The program concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, during which Dr. Morrison addressed audience inquiries and reflected on the ongoing significance of illuminated manuscripts in both religious and artistic contexts.
