The Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church has introduced a series of innovative initiatives focused on leadership development and continuing education. These efforts underscore the Diocese’s commitment to fostering communities that are spiritually engaged, intellectually enriched, and dedicated to meaningful service.
In the second half of 2024, under the leadership of the Primate Archbishop Hovan Derderian, the Western Diocese embarked on a transformative journey to renew its mission, vision and role in today’s world. The new initiatives are guided by the conviction that leadership on all levels—firmly rooted in Christian faith and Armenian heritage—is the foundation for carrying the Armenian Church’s mission into the future. The Diocese has introduced a series of groundbreaking programs designed to strengthen and inspire its parish communities.
More than 1,000 people are the backbone of the mission of the Diocese, which incudes priests, deacons, parish council members, diocesan delegates, Sunday and Saturday school teachers, and volunteers. Three major initiatives were launched that place leadership development and continuing education at the heart of the Western Diocese’s vision:
Church Leadership Orientation Program (launched February 2025): This bi-monthly seminars equips parish council members, diocesan delegates, and committee executives with a deeper understanding of the Church’s faith, traditions, and mission. More than a training course, it is a process of formation and renewal designed to cultivate leaders who serve with both knowledge and conviction.
Altar Servers Leadership Program (launched June 2025): Designed for over 250 deacons and altar servers in the Western Diocese, this program strengthens theological study, pastoral skills, and liturgical practice. By focusing on continuing education, it ensures that those serving at the altar and in the parish communities do so with confidence, understanding, and a profound commitment to the sacred traditions of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Lay Ministry Program (expanding in 2025): Extending the call to leadership into the wider community, this initiative empowers parish and community members to take active roles in church life. It aims to foster deeper spiritual engagement and strengthen bonds within and among local parishes.
“These initiatives mark a critical step forward for our Diocese,” said Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, the Primate. “By investing in the cultivation and formation of leaders at every level, our aim is to build communities spread throughout the Western United States that are spiritually vibrant, dynamic, and steadfast in service to God and one another.”
Since its founding in 1927, the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church has been a spiritual home and cultural stronghold for Armenians across the Western United States. It continues to serve with a renewed vision and commitment towards its centenary and beyond.
