115th Anniversary of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Fowler

The faithful of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Fowler received the blessings of the Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The day marked a milestone in the life of the parish as Fowler's faithful community celebrated its 115th anniversary of consecration.

During the service, the Honorable Charles and Mrs. Deborah Poochigian were honored with the Pontifical Encyclical of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians and the accompanying St. Nersess Shnorhali Medal of Honor which was presented to the esteemed couple by Archbishop Derderian.

In his sermon, the Primate congratulated the faithful on their rich and enduring history. He eloquently described St. Gregory as a miracle in the small town of Fowler in which an Armenian Church has flourished for over a century. He reiterated the mission of the Western Diocese and expressed a powerful statement: “The Church is not just a place we visit. It is a Way of Life, rooted in faith and inspired by heritage. The 115th anniversary is significant as we honor with graciousness and reverence the Honorable Senator Charles and Supervisor Deborah Poochigian whose contribution to the community has been immense,” stated Archbishop Derderian.

A requiem prayer was also offered for the departed clergy, Parish Council members, and members of the auxiliary organizations of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church of Fowler whose service helped to shape its remarkable legacy.

Following the church services, a banquet was held in Markarian Hall, where parishioners and guests came together to celebrate this significant milestone. Welcoming remarks were delivered by the Master of Ceremonies Mr. Michael Missakian. Following Archpriest Fr. Kevork Arakelian’s invocation, Ed Nikssarian raised the first toast to the parish.

The guests were entertained by the musical performances of the highly-acclaimed Mazmanian and Kalebjian families.

Heartfelt remarks were delivered by the honorees Senator Charles and Supervisor Deborah Poochigian as they reaffirmed their commitment to serving the Armenian Church and the local community with steadfastness.

The Rev. Fr. Gomidas Zohrabian, Pastor of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church, spoke about the significance of commemorating the consecration anniversary, paying tribute to our forefathers for their profound physical and spiritual sacrifices in establishing the St. Gregory the Illuminator parish.

On behalf of the faithful, Fr. Gomidas expressed his deep appreciation to His Holiness Karekin II and Archbishop Hovnan Derderian for bestowing the St. Nersess Shnorhali Medal to the beloved parishioners.

He also thanked Mr. and Mrs. Poochigian for their unwavering dedication, calling them role models for others in the community. The Pastor also acknowledged Philip Hagopian, one of the devoted young parishioners, who faithfully plays the organ each Sunday with great enthusiasm.

In closing, Fr. Gomidas extended thanks to the Parish Council, its Chairlady Paulette Kalebjian, and the event committee for organizing this special celebration. Words of appreciation were also expressed to all the sponsors, volunteers, and attendees who contributed to making the day truly memorable.

The banquet concluded with the singing of "Happy Birthday" to St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church. The faithful shared a joyful moment cutting the anniversary cake, wishing many more blessed years to their beloved church.
