Winter/Spring Cultural and Educational Series have Begun at St. Apkar Armenian Church

On Wednesday, January 31, St. Apkar kicked off their series with a spectacular concert. Mr. Eric Edberg (cellist) and Mr. John Kamfonas (pianist) presented a program that included two sonatas by Armenian American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) and Samuel Barber (1910-1981).

The talented duo played so beautifully, as they evoked such passion with each piece selected. Those that attended the event was certainly delighted. One guest commented, “The musicians were incredible. I loved the music and the venue. The church is exquisite.” There was definitely something special about their performance! The evening concluded with light refreshments and conversation in the foyer of Melikian Hall.

The second event of their series took place on Sunday, Feb 11, following the celebration of St. Vartan. Rev. Fr. Saribekyan opened the event with a book dedication. Author, Vahan Setyan then discussed his book Armenian Origins of Basque; The Linguistic Verdict. Setyan has been examining world mythology, language and civilizations for the last decade; he has contributed to articles on ancient mythology, ancient Armenian history and its language. At the conclusion of this discussion, Vahan signed and sold his book, of which the proceeds were donated to the children and youth programs of St. Apkar. Copies of the book are still available for sale. Those interested may call the Church Office at (480) 451-8171.
